Grocery shopping has undergone a lot of changes over the years. What started out as cashiers and baggers with only paper bags has evolved into self-checkout, and now it’s becoming commonplace to have someone do your shopping so you don’t have to.

Thank goodness for innovation, because even when things aren’t crazy with a pandemic, grocery shopping can feel like a necessary evil that no one has time for. There are many companies out there now that will not only shop for all the items you need, but deliver them right to your door.

As more grocery delivery companies appear, prices are being driven down, and efficiency is going up. So, who out there is doing grocery delivery?

Shipt

Shipt is a delivery company that has a presence in just about every state around the country. They work directly with local stores and allow you to choose which store to shop from, and can deliver in as little as an hour on a typical day.

Head over to their site, put in your zip code, and see which stores they work with in your area.

It’s possible to pay per delivery, or sign up for an annual membership for $99 or a monthly membership for $14, allowing unlimited orders of $35 or more. Any order under $35 total dollars does come with a $7 delivery fee.

Instacart

Instacart is another delivery company that has is a huge player all over the country. Like Shipt, Instacart uses stores in your area to pick up your order and brings the products to your door within a few hours. Don’t worry; you’ll get to choose which store to shop from.

There’s no membership requirement to use Instacart, but you will pay somewhere between $3.99 to $5.99 to have your order delivered. If you’re planning to order regularly, you’ll want to invest in a membership for either $9.99 per month or $99 per year. Becoming a member waives the delivery charge on orders over $35 and reduces service fees.

It is worth noting that prices for items do tend to be a bit higher than if you did the shopping yourself. Check here to see which stores they work with in your area.

Freshdirect

Freshdirect has a unique approach to grocery delivery in that they aim to cut out the big-box stores and source the products you order straight from the farmers, artisans, and fisherman. This means you’re getting the freshest items out there for what they claim are the lowest prices. They also deliver packaged items, so you’re not limited to just the fresh stuff.

The company currently only has a presence in some New England states and half way down the Atlantic Coast.

Their yearly membership to their DeliveryPass will cost you $129, or $79 for 6 months. This gets you free delivery on whatever you order and you can even pick your delivery time. Otherwise, placing an order can cost up to $15.99 per order and you will have to be flexible with delivery dates and times.

Amazon Fresh

If you want to get your groceries delivered with Amazon, you’ll first need to have an Amazon Prime account. Once you’ve got that sorted, you’ll have access to many of Amazon’s perks.

Amazon Fresh is Amazon’s grocery delivery service where you place your order online, pick a time to have it delivered, and presto – groceries to your door. Amazon Fresh has over 500,000 items to choose from, including perishable items. With Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods, a lot of items come from there.

Amazon offers this service all over the country, but only in select cities. Heading over to the Amazon Fresh site will give you a better idea if your city made the cut. Depending on where you live, orders under $35 or $50 are subject to a $9.99 delivery fee.

Walmart

Not to be outdone, Walmart has recently launched their Walmart+ service, which allows for free delivery of online orders through the megastore. This service costs $12.95 per month or $98 per year. There is a $35 minimum on orders.

You can still use Walmart’s delivery service without Walmart+, but there will be delivery fees that vary depending on your location and the time that you schedule delivery.

Walmart has stores all over the country, and while most of them provide this service, be sure to check availability in your area.

Your Local Grocery Store

Don’t forget about the smaller, perhaps local or regional stores in your area. It’s worth taking the time to see what their offerings are, as sometimes they have unique items you can’t get anywhere else or special deals so they can compete with these big-name companies.
