Moving can be stressful at the best of times and one of the most stressful parts is packing up your home. Unfortunately, there is no magical way to snap your fingers and have your house packed unless you hire professional movers, so the best way to make things easier if you want to DIY your move is to make sure you have the right tools and materials. You can still drive around and search for free boxes in shops, but if you want to make it as easy as possible, you can actually order everything you need from Amazon and have it delivered right at your doorstep, ready for you to begin packing. I rounded up what I think is Amazon’s best moving supplies to save you a lot of time!

MOVING BOXES  packs of 25-30 boxes starting at $36.99

Most obviously, you need boxes when you’re moving. You can always drive around to different places and see if they have boxes, but that takes time, and sometimes, time is money. You are going to want boxes of varying sizes, because you need bigger boxes for things like lamps, but you need smaller boxes for things like books (because big boxes of books are heavy!).

SHARPIES, Large Chisel Tip, 4 ct., $9.49

To make unpacking easier, make sure you label your boxes. See below for stickers to put on your boxes for which room the boxes go in, but in addition to the stickers, it can be helpful to write a few “themes” on the box so you know what’s in there. In the kitchen, note which boxes have dishes and which boxes have pans. Note which boxes have books (that can probably stay in there for a while) and which boxes have the coasters you might want to put out immediately!

ROOM STICKERS, 16 rolls, $12.90

I just found out about these stickers and I think they’re brilliant. Yes, you can use a sharpie to write on the boxes, but these tell you at a glance which room the boxes go in, and the colour coding means it’s very easy to put boxes together when you get to your new house.

PLASTIC WRAP, 1000 ft Roll, twin pack, $15.88

Plastic wrap is great for wrapping up things with pieces that can fall out or break easily. You can also layer it with foam wrap or newsprint underneath to wrap breakable items. You can also wrap things to protect them from scratches or chips.  We also use this around appliances to keep doors shut and cords secure.

TAPE WITH TAPE DISPENSER, with 2 rolls of tape, $18.15

You’re obviously going to need tape to close up those boxes, but please don’t get tape without a dispenser and a handle. It makes it super easy to close up a box in just a second.  This is a purchase you will be thankful for years down the road as the handle will last and you just need refills later.

FOAM WRAP, 16 in wide, 150 ft., $16.50

This is great for wrapping up picture frames and other breakable items. You can tape it together or wrap it again with the plastic wrap that I listed above.

Clean NEWSPRINT, 125 sheets, $15.99

For some things like cups and smaller items, newsprint makes the most sense for wrapping. You can also ball up pieces of newsprint to help fill in spaces in a box to make sure it’s packed tightly.  While you can also use the Sunday paper this is unprinted and keeps from having to rewash or ink staining items.

FOAM PLATES, 100 ct., $12.72

If you packs all plates by putting a foam plate in between the dishes. This removes the need for wrapping the plates up and also keeps them clean.

MATTRESS BAGS $17.95

I didn’t use mattress bags until our last move, but they were worth the cost. The ones we got had handles which meant the mattresses could be dragged on the floor without damaging them or getting them dirty.

GARBAGE BAGS, 120 ct., $14.49

You can use garbage bags to pack soft items like pillows and stuffed animals, but you can also use them for trash as you’re packing. Moving is the best time to purge!

SCISSORS

Scissors are great for cutting plastic wrap and foam wrap and for other random tasks you might need.

Once you have all the items, get a big empty plastic bin and keep all your moving supplies in one place. You can move them with you from room to room so you’re not forever looking for the scissors or the Sharpies.
